Optical Smoke Alarms are more responsive to smoldering fires producing large particles of smoke, typically produced from fires of furniture and bedding. they are suitable in bedrooms, hallways, landings and living rooms but not kitchens or in the hallway if close to a shower or bathroom as false alarms could be a problem.

Alkaline battery backup what is it?

When the mains supply is disconnected either from a fault or power cut, the alkaline battery kicks in to ensure that alarm keeps monitoring for fires. The alkaline battery is designed to last up to 4 years in stand-by and up to 2 years in the event of mains failure. The smoke/heat alarm indicates when the battery need replacing.

How does an optical smoke alarm work?

A light beam is pulsed within the sensor chamber every 10 seconds to look for smoke. Any smoke present has to be visible to the naked eye to allow the light receptor to see it. When a large particle is detected the light beam will be scattered onto the light receptor and an electrical signal will be sent activating the alarm.
