Ionisation smoke alarms are particularly sensitive to the almost invisible smoke produced by fast flaming fires such as paper or clothing. They are ideal for bedrooms and can be located in hallways if sited away from the kitchen as they are sensitive to cooking fumes and may cause false alarms.
Alkaline battery backup what is it?
When the mains supply is disconnected either from a fault or power cut, the alkaline battery kicks in to ensure the alarm keeps monitoring for fires. The alkaline battery is designed to last up to 4 years in stand-by and up to 2 years in the event of mains failure. The smoke/heat alarm indicates when the battery needs replacing.
How does an ionisation smoke alarm work?
Inside the sensor chamber a minute (safe) radioactive element ionises the air within the chamber, causing a small current to flow which remains constant within the chamber. However once smoke particles enter the chamber the balance of the current is affected and an electrical signal is sent activating the alarm.
